We love dumplings and we wanted to prove the experts wrong that the best dumplings in Shanghai couldn't be that place in the commercial/tourist district Xiantandi. We scoured the streets, the markets, the malls, the parks and everything in between to look for a better dumpling. But after days of searching (and, of course, indulging in some exquite, awesome dumplings) we have to admit: the best dumplings are at Din Tai Fung. Not only is Din Tai Fung a chain restaurant but it's also not a Shanghainese restaurant (the original hails from Hong Kong). Even still, it's one of the best meals you'll have in your life (hey, we didn't say it. New York Times voted it as one of the Top Ten restaurants in the WORLD back in 1993 and believe us, not much has changed). What makes a good dumpling? The tenderness of the skin. The juiciness of the filling. The richness and flavor of the whole package. So when in Shanghai, sure, get it while's it hot. Can't make it to Shanghai? Visit the branch in Los Angeles.
